Hatch was born several years ago at a Springboard Innovation retreat at the Oregon coast. A non-profit’s tinkering with the notion of creating an ecosystem of social innovation has matured to the stage of action.

Founded in 2004, Springboard Innovation is an established 501(c)(3) non-profit that helps ordinary citizens design and launch sustainable, innovative solutions to local and global challenges.

Social enterprise, social business, hybrid change organization, financially sustainable not-for-profit… call it what you will, we work to build better models for leading change – making a living while making a difference.

We believe committed and innovative people change the world. The world needs genuine innovators. Innovators not only move mountains, they change the entire landscape.

However, through many years of experience, we realize it isn’t enough to transform the way an individual imagined change in the world. Getting support for social innovators is incredibly difficult. Selling their ideas to mission minded venture capitalists or granting institutions is near impossible.

In order to help create change, we have to do more than teach. We have to help fund, convene, and build as well.

The success of creating change through social innovation requires a new operating system. Change agents, nonprofits, citizen leaders, and social entrepreneurs need a place to accelerate good ideas. Graduates and Boomers need a place to engage. Entrepreneurs need quick access to what helps them grow. Hatch is that place. Hatch will change how we engage citizens, build enterprises, and leverage money. The idea is to create a sustainable asset—real estate—and wrap it in a mission.

Hatch is a social enterprise. It is a building with a mission. It is a laboratory of social innovation. It is a vision of the future of how we can change the way we create change. People want to do good in the world. They also want to make a living. Hatch proves that these forces do not have to be in opposition.

Hatch is a grand notion for a small nonprofit. But we believe there is no other way forward. We have to work for each other’s success.
